This was really a big big news for jailbreaking and unlocking community when it came out that iphone/smartphone unlocking is now prohibited starting from the 2013 models with effect from this week. Have a look on below advisory and it is clear that now this is the law of the land and anybody who for personal or commercial purposes unlocks the iPhone or any other smartphone that is purchased in 2013 will be held criminal as per the new law in US:

ADVISORY

BY DECREE OF THE LIBRARIAN OF CONGRESS

IT SHALL HENCEFORCE BE ORDERED THAT AMERICANS SHALL NOT UNLOCK THEIR OWN SMARTPHONES.

PENALTY: In some situations, first time offenders may be fined up to $500,000, imprisoned for five years, or both. For repeat offenders, the maximum penalty increases to a fine of $1,000,000, imprisonment for up to ten years, or both.*

If you are willing to read more on this you can visit the detailed articles on theatlantic. In my view this law will benefit most for the carriers for whom it was becoming big loss when people got smartphones from them and go away and used it for other carriers after unlocking, also this law will be a big blow for unlocking companies that were providing unlock services on nominal charges.

Now it will become more competitive in sense of provision of unlocked smartphones, for which many carriers will be charging more, and people must now care about the packages and contracts while purchasing new smartphones. The best option I believe shall be to purchase the unlocked smartphones from the beginning.

What do you think about the new iphone / smartphone unlocking law, give your comments below.
